The Upside of E-Cigarettes

tom_kiklas_tvecaWhile anti-tobacco lobbyists claim that more studies need to be done on e-cigarettes, they can’t refute science. A single e-cigarette cartridge contains nine tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA) where a single full-flavored cigarette contains about 11,190 or 1,300 times more.

Whenever I hear people ask whether or not electronic cigarettes are safe or why these products aren’t studied more, my first reaction is that they don’t understand the category.
The electronic cigarette is comprised of only five common constituents, all of which have been in the U.S. food supply for generations and all of which have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for human inhalation use. So what more do we need to study?

Do we need more study on the propylene glycol used to make the vapor? That has already been completed by the EPA who stated, “Upon reviewing the available toxicity information, the Agency has concluded that there are no endpoints of concern of oral, dermal or inhalation exposure to propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol.”

Do we really need more studies on nicotine? Water? Food flavorings? There are currently over 30 scientific studies done on the electronic cigarette and in not one has there ever been found a single constituent at any level harmful to humans—including the FDA’s own 2009 e-cig study.

The rational answer is that the e-cigarette has already proven its social utility. Those that wish to limit or deny the public’s access to e-cigarettes by claiming that these products have not yet been proven to be safe are displaying an ignorance or agenda that is not in the public’s best interest.

Dispelling Myths
In August, the city council in Laguna Beach, Calif. reviewed whether or not to ban the use of electronic cigarettes within the city and its attorney wrote the following contained in the bill’s amendment. “The FDA has conducted laboratory analysis of electronic cigarette samples and found that they contained carcinogens and toxic chemicals to which users and bystanders could be exposed.”
The Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association (TVECA) had the opportunity to present to the city council the scientific facts in rebuttal to the July 2009 FDA press release. This led to the city council voting not to ban e-cigarettes.

Also within the FDA release, which has been the genesis of so much confusion on the safety and efficacy of electronic cigarettes, is a request by the FDA that healthcare professionals and consumers may report serious adverse events (side effects) or product quality problems with the use of e-cigarettes to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program. During this same time the FDA was litigating with TVECA co-founder Ray Story. A subsequent ruling in that litigation by the Washington D.C. Appellate Court stated, “Regarding harm to third parties and to the public interest, the district court observed the FDA had cited no evidence to show that electronic cigarettes harmed anyone.”

The FDA had more than a year to find and present to the court incidences of harm that were caused to consumers by e-cigs to buttress their litigation, yet presented not one.

E-cigarettes are a simple product that are enjoyed by more than four million Americans. They are a less harmful, logical option than smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes. There have been billions and billions of uses of the e-cig this year alone without a single incidence of harm. Trying to eliminate these useful products is in itself not safe.

Tom Kiklas is cofounder and chief financial officer for the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association (TVECA), an association of private sector companies engaged in electronic cigarette technologies. TVECA’s mission is to provide the tools and information necessary for policy-makers and private sector companies to make informed decisions about the management and use of electronic cigarette technologies.

SO NOW WE HAVE TO WAIT LIKE WE DID WITH REGULAR CIGARETTES TO FIND OUT THAT THERE’S SOME HIDDEN ELEMENT IN THESE SO CALLED E-CIGARETTES BESIDES VAPOR AND PEOPLE START GETTING ALL KINDS OF REACTIONS AND ILLNESSES FROM THEM ANND THEN MAYBE AFTER THE MANUFACTURERS CLAIM THEY DIDN’T KNOW AND HOW SORRY THEY ARE YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THAT ANYTHING THAT GOES INTO YOUR BODY WITH ANY TRACE OF NICOTINE IS NO GOOD….JUST DON’T SMOKE!!!!!!(ANYTHING)

Hopeful simply illustrates the mindset of Public Health officials worldwide and once again show all Vapers what we are up against.

The ignorance on so many levels is astonishing. There have been NO HEALTH RISKS FOUND! With the tobacco industry desperate to regain revenue, if there was something worth finding they would have found it. They are paying researchers millions to find something and they are all coming up empty, WHY? Because there is nothing to find stupid! Breathing in/out water vapor is less harmful than talking to a drunk person. And even if they find some tiny trace amount of some chemical 20 years from now that scientist link to some rare disease, ITS STILL BETTER THAN LIGHTING AND INHALING TOBACCO.

I’ve been Vaping for 5 months now. I was a pack a day smoker for 30 years. I haven’t touched a cigarette since I bought my e-cig! I don’t stink like a dirty ashtray anymore! I don’t cough. My health is improving. I love the variety of flavors, especially, the berry ones! Any time something new comes out, and people like it, someone has to find fault in it, instead of looking at the good in it. That’s AMERICA !!!!

first off my complaint isn’t with the e cig itself my complaint is with the shady way these people I dealt with in customer service is. I ordered the trial shipment around January 6th I started calling customer service around Jan 13th I was told that they sent it in the mail so I waited a couple days like I was told and called again same bull I had to bring up the idea track it then still claiming they couldn’t now im starting to think its a scam that they play dumb and ride out the the 12 days to be able to take the 99.00 dollars from my account I I told them again I didn’t get the first kit and don’t even take any money from my account until this is resolved here it is on the 18th I check my account and sure enough they took the 99.00 out of my account to me in my opinion they are nothing but a group of thieves. Now im told by them that they sent it out and I have to wait for my money until I receive the product and send it back.to them in my opinion already with there actions have put theirselves in a category of thieves.i will be putting this in complaint . gov I already spoke to someone at my bank they will retrieve my money that I told them not to take.I will also be pressing charges g. arnold

First off I would like to point out that e-juice actually does NOT contain any TSNA’s at all considering the fact that e-juice is not a tobacco specific item, as it does NOT contain tobacco, also on that second to last paragraph you said, and I quote
“There have been billions and billions of uses of the e-cig this year alone without a single incidence of harm.”
Now, if that were true could you explain to me all the posts on electronic cigarette forums about people catching bronchitis off of electronic cigarettes?
I have been a personal example of that and I must admit you were pretty strong on that statement but you should at least do your research. There have been incidences where I’ve used electronic cigarettes to quit smoking and every time I used one I was back in the hospital the next day, no matter the chemical compound, whether it was vg based or pg base, or heck even 50-50 of both, I recently just quit smoking and I had to seek alternative methods which led me to swedish snus, which also contains roughly, and sometimes less than the same amount of nitrosamines as your electronic cigarette per gram, not to mention the fact that its way more natural than a genetically modified chemical composition some genius in the lab had to make, also snus has been in existence a lot longer than cigarettes and safer than smoking and vaping because it doesn’t require the combustion that cigarettes and e-cigs need in order to produce the smoke/vapor that they do.
