This summer, many states see increases in tobacco taxes, while a few enact small decreases.
Starting July 1, several state cigarette and tobacco tax rates changed due to action by state legislatures, the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) reported.
Following are updates from NATO on cigarette and tobacco taxes as of July 1.
Cigarette Tax Rates
Hawaii: Increase from $3.00 per pack to $3.20 per pack (this automatic increase was enacted in prior years).
Connecticut: Increase from $3.00 per pack to $3.40 per pack.
New Hampshire: Decrease from $1.78 per pack to $1.68 per pack.
Vermont: Increase from $2.24 per pack to $2.62 per pack.
Little Cigar Tax Rates
Connecticut: Increase from $3.00 per pack to $3.40 per pack.
Hawaii: Increase from $3.00 per pack to $3.20 per pack (this automatic increase was enacted in prior years).
New Hampshire: Decrease from $1.78 per pack to $1.68 per pack.
Utah: Change from 86% tax rate to $1.70 per pack.
Vermont: Increase from $2.24 per pack to $2.62 per pack.
Large Cigar Tax Rates
California: Decrease from 33.02% to 31.73%.
Connecticut: Increase from 27.50% to 50% (a tax cap of $.50 per large cigar applies).
New Hampshire: Decrease from 65.03% to 48%.

Smoking Tobacco Tax Rates
California: Decrease from 33.02% to 31.73%.
Connecticut: Increase from 27.50% to 50%.
New Hampshire: Decrease from 65.03% to 48%.
Vermont: Increase from $0.112 per .0325 ounce to $0.131 per .0325 ounce (roll-your-own tobacco only).
Smokeless Tobacco Tax Rates
California: Decrease from 33.02% to 31.73%.
Connecticut: Increase from 27.5% to 50% (chewing tobacco) and from $0.55 per ounce to $1.00 per ounce (moist snuff).
New Hampshire: Decrease from 65.03% to 48%.
