Handee Marts Wins Ethics Award

The Pittsburgh Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals announced the 2008 recipients of its eighth annual Pittsburgh Business Ethics Awards (PBEA), held on Feb. 13 at a Pittsburgh hotel, and convenience store operator Handee Marts Inc. took away top honors in its category.

The awards were presented to honor Pittsburgh-area companies that demonstrate a firm commitment to ethical business practices.

The Society of FSPTM Pittsburgh Chapter presented the award in conjunction with the David Berg Center for Ethics and Leadership at the University of Pittsburgh.

Three separate awards were presented based on the size of the companies and the number of employees.

Factors taken into consideration included the companies’ commitment to ethics and ethical decision-making in everyday operations, management philosophies and responses to crises or challenges.

The 2008 PBEA recipient in the Small Company category (with less than 250 employees) was Handee Marts, a 7-Eleven licensee that operates 62 stores. Other finalists in Handee Marts’ category were Lexus of North Hills and TriLogic Corporation.

The recipient in the Large Company category (more that 2,500 employees) was FedEx Ground, while the recipient in the Medium-Sized category (250 to 2,500 employees) was MARC USA.

Judges for the award program were from U.S. Steel, Alcoa, MSA Corp., Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University and Kennametal Inc.

The winners are now eligible to enter into the American Business Ethics Award sponsored by the National Society of FSPTM.
